You need to check for a spark. There are a few ways to do this. The easiest way is to remove the spark plug and put it back in the spark plug cap. Then ground it to the engine - you should be able to lay it against a non-painted portion of the engine. Make sure there is good metal-to-metal contact. In a semi darkened area, attempt to start the scooter. You should see a definite spark at the tip of the spark plug. It's hard to see in direct light. If the color of the spark is blue, that means it's a strong spark. A white color is less strong, and a yellow color is weak. Most scooter starting systems are a bit weak (compared to cars). Even a yellow spark should start your scooter just fine.

Like most things, there is a technique to this. Even a small person can put a large motorcycle on the center stand with the proper technique. Here's what I do: Hold the scooter with your left hand on the left grip. Put your right (or left foot) on the center stand to hold it down. Put your right hand under the seat area, where there should be a railing or a grip. This is the place where you'll lift the scooter a bit. Now in one motion, push down with your foot while you tug back with your left hand and up lift up with your right hand. If you do all of these movements at the same time with the proper motion, you'll have zero problems.

Gas powered vehicles machines are complex systems with so many things to look after on the other hand an electric scooter is a very simple machine. A person with little knowledge of electrical circuits can repair it on his own without any need to look for a mechanic. But if knowledge of electrical circuits is not there, many options are available.

If you have an electrical scooter in need of repair the first thing you can do is take it to a standard mechanical workshop and ask for help. Since normal gas powered scooters also have electrical circuits in them, every mechanic will have at least some basic knowledge about circuits.

If they refuse to repair it you can simply ask the manufacturer of the electric scooter regarding any special workshops where such electric vehicles are repaired. Since selling electric scooters is a business for them it is strong possibility that they have special tie-ups with workshops around the country to service their scooters.

Depending upon the kind of repair your scooter may need a week or for minor repairs just a few hours. Sometimes it is just a matter of charging the battery (if you don't charge it regularly) ad it's ready to drive again.

However it is necessary to understand that 'prevention is the best cure'. Regularly use your electric scooter and don't forget to charge it regularly too. If you are way for a few days from your home, you can carry it with you or store in way that it is safe from moisture. Normally it is advisable to look for repair shops before you buy an electric scooter bur since these machines are not complex, they can be repaired easily without much expenses on your part.

Double check all connections, then crank for 10-15 seconds. Did it start? Do you hear any popping, like the engine is trying to run? Most scooters will not start if you apply throtte while cranking. Honda scooters tend to start easier if you apply throttle just as the engine catches. Most Yamaha scooters will not accept any throttle at all until they warm up a bit. If the scooter catches, but doesn't start, let it rest ~15 seconds before trying again.

Next, you'll have to remove the carburetor and clean it. There are a low of tiny fuel and air passageways in the carb that must be clean it order for your scooter to run right. Carefully take the carb apart. This can be relative easy (on a 50cc scooter) or quite difficult (a Riva 180-200 has limited carb access and 8 separate hoses running to the carb). The carb has tiny passages that get gummed up. The scooter just will not run correctly if the carb is not completely clean, so take your time. I use a gallon container of carb dip (you can get a gallon at your local auto supply store for ~$10).

So let's take a look at some safety ideas. Wear a helmet, knee and elbow pads. Children under the age of 12 should not ride motorized scooters. Avoid heavy traffic at all costs. Don't ride at night. If you have to ride at night, be sure you have a good headlight and a taillight as well as side reflectors. Wear sturdy shoes that have a good sole on them. If your helmet doesn't have a face shield, invest in a good pair of goggles are safety glasses. Avoid gravel or uneven roads. Know the local laws. Have insurance. Take a class on scooter safety. Next up the line, you should get a performance carb and/or a new exhaust pipe. You'll need to replace these two components (and probably the air box) at the same time to get the best performance increase. The engine is basically just an air pump. The more air you can move through the engine, the more power you get. Adding a bigger carb draws more air (and more fuel) into the engine. But you restrict the amount of added air if you don't change the air box. You also restrict the amount of air out of the engine if you don't replace the exhaust pipe with a bigger (or more free flowing) exhaust pipe. In addition, just changine the carb changes the fuel / air ratio inside the engine. Your engine may or may not like the change. For instance, the new carb could give you more top end power, but also lead to starting problems. Or it may run better at low RPM's and poor at high RPM's. Tuning for best performance can be a lot of work! Try to buy a kit (carb, air box, exhaust pipe) that is tuned for your scooter. It will make things much easier. Lastly, add the big bore kit. This will give you more torque (pulling power) and better acceleation, but it won't necessarily add top speed unless you make gearing changes. For larger scooters, there aren't too many performance parts available here in the U.S. (except for some of the newer scooters). The easiest thing is to do a web search for "scooter performance parts" and see what you find. Otherwise, you can try:
Replacing your worn drive belt. This will give you a few more MPH because a new belt rides higher in the pulleys. Changing your roller weights (you can use just a slightly heavier rollers for more top speed). Adjusting your valves. Installing a new air filter, change the oil, put in a new spark plug. Keeping your tires at proper inflation levels. This also helps you get better mileage and prevent premature tire wear.

First remove all rubber and gaskets or they will be damaged. After a ~20 minute soaking I blow out the carb with compressed air. You have to get all the jets and the passageways clean. Be sure the jets are clear, especially the starter jet. Sometimes carb cleaner won't clear out these tiny jets. Use a guitar/piano wire, a strand of copper electircal wire, or a tiny drill bit pin vise. Be sure not to increase the size of the hole in the starter jet or you'll change the tuning. Carefully reassemble everything, checking for cracks in the rubber carb boots and the gaskets. Replace them if they are old and cracked. Be sure and remove all rubber and gasket material first or they could get ruined. Spray carb cleaner also works if you're dilligent.

Big, Bad and Fast. That is what used to be the cry from the streets when it came to gas scooters. These days, people everywhere are parking their SUV�s and hopping on a gas scooter for their short trips. How do you choose the right gas scooter? The answers are simpler than you think.

Choosing a gas scooter is not rocket science, but it does take some thought. You need to determine where your going to ride it, whether you want an electric start, as well as how much you want to spend on it. Taking into consideration these primary factors, you can make a decisive decision that will not leave you with a gas scooter that does not meet your particular need.

Where are you going to ride your gas scooter? Gas scooters come in two main types; On road and off road. Depending on where you plan to ride your gas scooter, will determine which type you purchase.

Off-Road: Gas scooters that are used off-road will have a stronger reinforced frame with a more robust suspension system. Off road enthusiasts race through trails and dirt tracks and some have jumps, so the gas scooter must be able to handle this type of abuse. Street gas scooter tires are either slicks for racing, or grooved tread for road grip.

Another thing to consider is if you want the advantage of an electric start. Electric start gas scooters are primarily available on the street gas scooters. With an electric start, you need a battery. The battery and start coil are housed under the scooter footplate n a built in box. This type of setup is more convenient. However, this adds considerable weight to the scooter. You will not see an electric start on a performance gas scooter. They don�t want to be bogged down by all the extra weight.

How much do you want to spend on your gas scooter? The basic street gas scooters are relatively cheap for all that you get. The average adult street gas scooter will only set you back a couple of hundred dollars. While a performance gas scooter for either off road or on road racing can get as high as the thousands. Spend your money wisely.

Believe it or not, your Honda and Yamaha scoots do have a small transmission. It's hidden away in a small area near the rear wheel. Don't forget about the tranny oil! There is only about 200cc of oil here - a very small amount. Most scooters use standard high quality engine oil and some take gear oil. If your scooter takes engine oil, it should be changed fairly frequently. The gears put a lot of shear stress on the oil, reducing its effectiveness over time. It is definitely a pain to change this oil and add the new oil, but it must be done. If not, the oil will eventually turn to a thick dark, molasses like stuff. Your bearings and gears will be very unhappy, and they will eventually fail. I once bought a Elite 150 from a nice lady who didn't change the tranny oil. The tranny on this scooter sounded horrible when it was ridden. She was lucky it had not locked up the rear wheel when she was riding, which would have probably caused a big crash. I bought it for $20 because she didn't want to have the tranny fixed. When I took the transmission apart, it was really in bad shape. Several gears and a few of the bearings were destroyed. I got it going again, but the cost of labor and parts was over $200. All because $0.25 of oil had not been changed...

Fuel/air mixture. The last thing is the fuel/air mixture. You could be getting too much or too little of either. If the scooter has been sitting for a while, it's likely the gas has evaporated and left a bunch of sludgy deposits. Ask the seller when it last ran. If it's been more than ~3 months, you should clean out the fuel system and the carb. Disconnect the fuel line and drain the old gas. I've been able to burn old gas with no problem by using it in my truck. Add fresh fuel and make sure it flows smoothly through the petcock (on the bottom of the fuel tank). If the petcock is controlled by vacuum, you'll have to draw a vacuum on the vacuum line in order for fuel to flow. The vacuum line will be the smaller line on the petcock. Do you get a good, steady flow of gas? If so, good. If not you will have to remove the petcock and clean it. The gas flow should stop when you release the vacuum.

The most important thing to do is regular oil changes for four stroke engines. Two stroke engines consume their engine oil, so you don't have to worry about changing it. Our scooters only hold about a quart of engine oil. The bigger Yamaha scooters have oil filters, but the Hondas do not have filters (just a small screen). Given the small displacement (engine size) of most scooters, they tend to get run hard. The small amount of oil, lack of oil filter and high rpm usage leads to oil breakdown much quicker than your in automobile. I change my scooter oil every 1000 miles. This may sound extreme, but consider two points: How long does it take you to go 1000 miles? Unless you are riding a 250cc scoot on the highway, it will probably take you a few months. It's not like you need to change it every week. If you are putting on a lot of highway miles, the engine is probably not being stressed with a lot of stop-and-go riding. You also are less likely to run the engine through a lot of hot/cold cycles. In this case you may be able to extend the oil change time. But I wouldn't :>)

Getting To Grips With Riding An Electric Bike

There can be little argument that zipping around on your scooter is far preferable to trudging around on foot and is a much more fun way to travel than driving a car. It is important before you get started that you at least have the first idea of how to ride a scooter, unless you want to wrap yourself round a lamp-post!

Riding a scooter is surprisingly easy to get the hang of :

First of all, start your engine - you'll only get so far with a head-wind! Many engines are started by pulling at a cord attached to the engine - the same as you would start a lawn mower. Electric engines have to be push-started, by first riding the scooter as you would a kick scooter.

Get a firm grip on the handlebars and place one foot on the deck of the scooter, leaving your other foot on the ground so that you get comfortable and remain balanced. Once you are ready to move off hit the throttle to accelerate, if you have a gas engine, then bring your foot off the ground when you begin to pick up speed. Be sure to accelerate gradually in order that yourself and the scooter remain as one, don't accelerate too hard as it will fly off into the road ahead leaving you looking miserable on the deck!

It is important that your posture on the scooter is correct, avoid keeping your feet and body up front near the handlebars so that your weight is distributed across the length of the scooter. You also should have one foot slightly ahead of the other, both facing forward.

Steering your scooter is very similar to that of a push-bike, steer by turning the handlebars in the direction you want to go, and lean slightly into each turn. When riding your scooter treat the brake handles carefully, being careful not to grip them too strongly which might cause you to flip. Apply a steady and subtle squeeze to slow or stop the scooter. There's no need to use the scooter's brakes at all to slow down, just take your hand off the scooter's throttle.

In order to get some practice in before taking to the streets it is a good idea to take your scooter into a big empty space to master turning, braking, etc. Get the feel of your scooter to build up your confidence.

The pair can be used for all other models of three wheeled scooters, with different lbs.

Whereas scooters with 270 lbs and 309 lbs full weight and a maximum capacity of 500 lbs, run on a pair of 12V 32 amp batteries, that powers both the scooters to attain a speed of 5.7 mph and cover 25 miles and more.

It is advisable to drivers to not pay much for a pair of batteries. They cost an average of $40 a piece. It is essential to make sure that the scooter is charged twice a week, especially in winter.

Next up the line, you should get a performance carb and/or a new exhaust pipe. You'll need to replace these two components (and probably the air box) at the same time to get the best performance increase. The engine is basically just an air pump. For larger scooters, there aren't too many performance parts available here in the U.S. (except for some of the newer scooters). The easiest thing is to do a web search for "scooter performance parts" and see what you find. Otherwise, you can try:
Replacing your worn drive belt. This will give you a few more MPH because a new belt rides higher in the pulleys. Changing your roller weights (you can use just a slightly heavier rollers for more top speed). Adjusting your valves. Installing a new air filter, change the oil, put in a new spark plug. Keeping your tires at proper inflation levels. This also helps you get better mileage and prevent premature tire wear.

Compression check. If you just acquired the scooter, you should first do a full inspection before you try to get it running. Please see this page on restoration. If this is the case, I'd do a compression check first because it's easy. First check the quantity and condition of the engine oil. Add oil as necessary. I wouldn't change it unless it's terribly dirty. The engine could be bad so you'd waste the oil change. Hook up or purchase a good battery. Leave out the spark plug and crank the scooter for ~5 seconds. This helps to circulate the oil. Let it set for ~15 seconds and do it again. It's not a good idea to continuously crank the starter because it can overheat and wear prematurely. Most scooters need a minimum of 100 psi in compression to run start and properly. Compression should be checked when the engine is warm, but that's kind of hard to do if the scooter is not running. So just hook up a compression gauge and open up the throttle all the way. Crank the scooter until the needle on the compression gague stops moving. This should take no more than 5 seconds. Very roughly, 100-125 psi is good, 125-150 psi is very good, and 150+ psi is great. If you don't have this level of compression then you have bad valves and/or bad piston rings. If you want, you can add a teaspoon or so of oil to the engine through the spark plug hole. Then try the compression test again. If compression is higher, then it's likely you have bad rings. The oil will seal the rings and give you better compression. If compression is the same, then you have bad/misadjusted valves.

Remove the fuel and vacuum lines from the petcock to the carb. Place a suitable container under the fuel line and draw air on the vacuum line to the petcock (if so equipped) and see how well the gas flows. The flow has to be more than a trickle. It should be steady and fairly substantial. If you get this flow, then you're ok. Run at least a pint of gas through to help flush the system. If you don't get a flow then it's likely your petcock is clogged. You have to remove it to disassemble and clean it. Carefully reinstall it on the gas tank or you could get a gas leak. Reassemble everything and try to start the scooter. It will take several seconds of cranking to get the gas to work its way from the gas tank to the carb. Hopefully it will start now! :>)

First remove all rubber and gaskets or they will be damaged. After a ~20 minute soaking I blow out the carb with compressed air. You have to get all the jets and the passageways clean. Be sure the jets are clear, especially the starter jet. Sometimes carb cleaner won't clear out these tiny jets. Use a guitar/piano wire, a strand of copper electircal wire, or a tiny drill bit pin vise. Be sure not to increase the size of the hole in the starter jet or you'll change the tuning. Carefully reassemble everything, checking for cracks in the rubber carb boots and the gaskets. Replace them if they are old and cracked. Be sure and remove all rubber and gasket material first or they could get ruined. Spray carb cleaner also works if you're dilligent.

There are travel scooters designed to be portable and lightweight. This is the type to buy if you are a traveler and need a scooter that you can fold-up or disassemble easily to load into the trunk of your car. Travel scooters also tend to be the least expensive for a basic model but additional features will equal a higher priced model.

For versatility, the regular 3 wheel scooter is great because you can use it pretty comfortably both indoors and outdoors. This machine generally has a good turning radius, which is especially important for maneuvering around furniture and objects inside the house. If the primary use for your scooter is outside, you should consider a 4 wheeled scooter, which is more stable.

The next scooter type, the 4 wheel, doesn't have as excellent a turning radius of the travel scooter or the 3 wheel mobility scooter, but as mentioned above, it offers more stability. This larger machine scores higher marks in durability, too. If you need a stable scooter to navigate rugged terrain (and to use mostly outdoors), the 4 wheel scooter is your best choice. Another advantage is that these scooters tend to go the fastest and have the longest battery range. Some other features to consider if you plan to use the scooter outside to also have a master key lock, reflectors, a horn, a locking seat and an automatic circuit breaker to cut off all power so that the automatic braking system will bring the scooter to a stop in case of an electrical problem

Once you've determined the type of scooter that best meets your needs, it's time to do some research on brands, models and a reliable dealer. Factors that will affect your decision will be the price, range, comfort and weight capacity. Of course, there are other factors that you may want to consider when deciding on a scooter, so be sure to list out everything that concerns you.

Getting Around

If you plan on using your scooter inside your house but have uneven surfaces, such as a transition between two rooms, you will need a small threshold ramp. Portable scooter ramps come in a number of different types to handle a variety of situations such as getting up sidewalks, curbs or a few steps.

What About Transporting Your Scooter

If you plan on traveling by vehicle with your mobility scooter (other than a travel scooter) you will need to use either a lift or carrier. The carrier usually resides outside your van, and it is designed to transport your scooter where you need to go. Lifts and carriers can weigh between 75 and 200 pounds.

If you have an electric choke, check it to make sure it works. Check the resistance between the wires - you should see around 10 ohms or less. Measure the length of the choke assembly. Remove the choke from the carb and plug the wires into a 12V source for 15 minutes. The choke body should be warm. Measure the length again - it should increase by around 1/8".

Install a new spark plug (especially if the engine is a two stoke). Clean or replace the air filter as necessary. The carb, air cleaner, and exhaust pipe are all carefully tuned to work together. Most scooters absolutely WILL NOT run correctly if any of these parts are changed in a haphazard manner!
